OVERVIEW

The Cuyabeno Lodge is located in the 1.5 million acres within the Cuyabeno Reserve  with 7 detached thatched-roof wooden cabins and 3 canopy-level “Superior rooms”, main cabin with kitchen, bar, hammock room, observation point & restaurant.

This eco-lodge is located in the Laguna Grande  in the Cuyabeno Wildlife  Reserve which has been established in 1979 and covering over 650,000 hectares ( 1.5 million acres ) of primary rainforest in the northeastern part of the Ecuadorian Amazon around the Cuyabeno River.

Accessible from the provincial capital of Nueva Loja, over the years the reserve has become an important tourist destination because of its amazing animal and bird diversity, which includes twelve species of monkeys and well over 600 birds species.

When the Cuyabeno Lodge began operating in 1988, the owners believed that rainforest travelers should be accommodated in conditions that would be both in harmony with the surrounding environment and attuned to the needs of the modern visitor.

The lodge is certified by the Rainforest Alliance for its sustainable tourism practices and for its use of local materials in the construction of the facility. The lodge works closely with the local Siona indigenous community, whose members provide motor canoe transportation for the tours at the Cuyabeno Lodge.

The rainy season here is from mid-March to August, when Amazon river dolphins and manatees can be seen. The dry season extends from December to early March, sometimes leading to a dry lake – which means the Cuyabeno Lodge is only accessible on foot.

Location: Cuyabeno Lodge can be found in the province of Sucumbíos, in the north-eastern part of the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest. The lodge is situated on a peninsula on the Cuyabeno Lake within the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve.

Getting there involves a 30-minute flight from Quito to the town of Nueva Loja (or “Largo Agrio”), where the traveler will be met by the lodge’s bus. A two-hour bus drive will take you to the bridge over the Cuyabeno River for a box lunch at a restaurant, with the scenic journey (approximately 2-3 hours in the wet season, longer in the dry season) continuing by motorized canoe until you reach the lodge in the afternoon.

Accommodations: Scattered throughout the grounds are seven detached thatched-roof wooden cabins, each sleeping two people in double or twin beds. Three “Superior Rooms” are located in the observation tower, affording these spectacular views over the forest canopy.

The cabins are of various types: marital, doubles, triples, quadruples, and family sized cabins with 6 beds; suite. Each cabin has its own full private bathroom (two in the case of the 6 bedroom unit), mosquito nets over each bed, electricity (120v), and all the comfort you could find in a superior hotel. All rooms also have a balcony or terrace and private bathrooms with hot showers.

Facilities: Main cabin includes kitchen, bar, hammock room, observation point and restaurant.
