OVERVIEW

Sacha Lodge

Imagine yourself drifting down a narrow, winding creek surrounded by a lush, endless sea of tropical vegetation; and all that separates you from the deep black Amazon waters is a canoe, hand-carved out of a single tree trunk. As you maneuver around a bend something unidentified crashes off into the underbrush, and you catch a glimpse of two magnificent Blue and Yellow Macaws startled into flight.

Getting to Sacha Lodge:

The journey to Sacha begins in Quito, Ecuador’s capital city. From here, embark on a 30-minute flight over the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Andes Mountains and then down 8,500 ft (2,600 meters) into the Amazon Basin. Arrive at Puerto Francisco de Orellana, locally know as Coca. A naturalist guide takes guests to the private house of Sacha Lodge, with modern facilities, where lunch will be served before you will be taken down to the docks, where a covered, motorized canoe will be waiting to start on a 2 hour, 50-mile (80 kilometer) journey down the Napo River, one of the Amazon’s main tributaries.

Upon arrival to the 5000 acre (2,500 hectares) private reserve of Sacha Lodge, a 30-minute walk on a raised boardwalk will lead guests to Lake Pilchicocha. There you will board dugout canoes with native paddlers that will carry you across the lake to Sacha Lodge.

Accommodations: The lodging at Sacha was carefully designed to offer comfort to the traveler yet preserve the environment and the rainforest. All our cabins have high thatched roofs and private shaded terraces. They are constructed with traditional materials and nestle, well concealed, into the lush surroundings. Each of the 26 rooms, which include single, double and (upon request) triple accommodations, provides a private bathroom with flushing toilet and hot shower. All cabins are screened against insects, have ceiling fans and two comfortable double beds.

During free time, visitors may overlook the jungle from hammocks and often report seeing wild fauna such as toucans, agoutis and monkeys right from their own cabin! Guests may also enjoy a raised lookout above our main bar and lounge, which offers a scenic view of Pilchicocha Lake and excellent opportunities to do bird watching.

ITINERARY

4 Days 3 nights Friday to Monday

Day 1
A 30-minute flight over the Andes from Quito takes us to coca. Upon arrival you will be met by your guide and enjoy a quick lunch before heading out to Laguna Pilchicocha by canoe (approx 2 hours) and then a short trek (30 minutes) through the forest to the lodge. At the lodge there are flexible activities for the afternoon: swimming in the Pilchicocha Lake, bird-watching on the tower, or a visit to the butterfly house. After dinner there is an exciting night walk to look for nocturnal species or a canoe trip in search of caiman alligators.

Day 2
Early morning visit to the canopy walkway for literally a spectacular birds-eye view of the forest! The walkway is 36m high and 275m long and brings you closer to the canopy species than ever before. The rest of the morning is spent hiking on local trails with your naturalist guide who will explain about the medicinal plants and fauna you encounter on route. After lunch at the lodge the afternoon is set aside for more hiking – either on the gentle trail along the Rio Napo, or the more adventurous Leoncillo Trail in search of the elusive Dusty Titi Monkey. Dinner at the lodge.

Day 3
Breakfast at the lodge. We spend the morning exploring the Lagarto Cocha Trail which provides the opportunity to learn about the native people and their relationship with the forest – the trees where native people believe the spirits of their ancestors live, and the mysterious “dwende” or devil-man of the forest. Arriving at Lagarto Cocha Lake we take a canoe ride – species that live around the lake include anaconda, caiman and capuchin / squirrel monkeys. Back at the lodge there is time for relaxation in the hammocks or a swim and then lunch. In the afternoon we head out for a canoe ride through the flooded part of Amazon forest where if lucky it may be possible to see otters, various species of monkey, and sloths. The canoe ride finishes at the canopy tower for views of Sumaco Volcano (if clear) and a stunning sunset. The return canoe trip is very atmospheric with the chorus of the frogs and glint of alligator eyes in the water. Dinner at lodge.

Day 4
An early breakfast to depart the lodge heading back to Quito. The return journey is by canoe and plane (exact reverse of the journey in).
